I Love Dick – An Art History Lesson

We will be snacking on snacks while watching the I Love Dick pilot on my studio rooftop for the June 12th, 2017 2nd Monday. (Forecast 87degrees and sunny.) After, we can discuss topics of the show eg. female artist struggle, the importance of referencing history, etc.  I’ve gathered the short video art reference clips (thanks Huffington Post article) speckled throughout the show and we will be viewing those as well.

I Love Dick pilot screening with video art/film references and casual discussion.
Monday, June 12
Doors open at 7
Screening at 8ish (30min)
BYOB, Grill stuff and/or snacks

““I Love Dick” is a series based off Chris Kraus’ pioneering 1995 book of the same name, created by “Transparent” showrunner Jill Soloway and written by an all-women writer’s room. Like its source material, the show is a manifesto for female desire and creativity. Over the course of the show, Kraus finds her voice as an artist and a woman, her newfound, unabashed power of expression igniting the other creative women in her midst. “I Love Dick” acts as a sort of flame, sparking the viewers ― and, potentially, a next generation of artists ― into action.”

There are many references to significant artists in which small clips are displayed throughout the show – a juicy video art history lesson.

“Taken from films that date between 1964 and 2012, the clips are culled from film, dance, pornography, and video and performance art. They feature iconic feminist artists like Marina Abramovic and Carolee Schneemann and contemporary luminaries like Petra Cortright.”

DIY Screen Printing
This “2nd Monday” will be a 2 part session.

Sunday, May 7. 4-7pm ish
1.) Meet at Genesis Art Supply on Western near Fullerton to buy supplies at 4pm.  (Might need to switch this to Blick on Kingsbury near north)
Average prices of supplies you will need to purchase. Can split and share emulsion.
• Photo Emulsion kit: $30 – 24oz + sensitizer
• Screen: $15-25
• Print on transparency (FedEx Office): $3-5
• Screen printing ink: $8 – per 8oz
2.) Head to my studio to coat screens with photo emulsion.  Must dry overnight.
3.) Share what you’d like to turn into a screen.  Will need to have design printed on transparency by Monday’s session.  Can print on 8.5×11″ at FedEx Office yourself or email file to me and I will get printed.  I recommend 2 copies to ensure dark enough image.  Or draw directly on transparency.

Monday, May 8. 6-10pm ish
1.) Set up burning screens
2.) Hang while we wait.  Should take 20-30 min per screen. Grill stuff to eat?
3.) Wash screens and dry them.
4.) Test printing!  Bring a tee or 2 or fabric or paper to print on.

Please let me know if you plan on attending: info@gravesmichelle.com or call/text me.

Casual Critique

Monday, February 13th, 2017.
Studio opens at 6pm.
Critique from 7-9pm.
Required RSVP: info@gravesmichelle.com
Please be respectful of my shared studio space.

Next 2nd Monday will be a critique in a casual sense.  This is an opportunity to bring transportable visual work, or writing, or really anything that you would like constructively analyzed in an allotted amount of time.  We have extension cords and outlets if any electricity is needed as well.
This is the first official critique of the 2nd Mondays gathering so I will be improvising the organization a bit.  Arrive as early as 6pm and we will start around 7pm.  I imagine we will go until about 9pm and possibly stay to socialize a bit after.  There is an awesome rooftop with good freight train watching.  The low temp is not supposed to be too cold.
Please RSVP to info@gravesmichelle.com for a headcount of who will be bringing work and who is just attending.  Also, BYO consumables and chair if needed.  I have some chairs but not stacks.

Call 312.391.3253 upon arrival.

Close to the Kedzie Green line stop
(that I don’t highly recommend too late at night.
I think it stops running around 12:30am.)

Conceive Collaborate Create

I’ve been brewing this idea of somehow solidifying a community of creatives with the intention of discussion, collaboration, and exhibition. (Motivated, positive community is extremely important in these days of political confusion.) There are many directions this monthly event can go but the first step is to start it up, right?! So, every 2nd Monday of the month from around 5-9pm, I will be hosting a [BYO] gathering at my shared studio space in East Garfield Park. By providing an atmosphere for motivated creatives to gather, I know many great things will come of it.

Come on over next Monday, Nov 14 anytime between 5 -9pm with the intention of communicating a possible idea or just to hang and chat with other creative humans in an awesome 1400sqft space with a loft, a rooftop view and front row seats for the artfully painted freight trains.

It’s off the Kedzie Green line stop and there is plenty of parking. Ring the buzzer when you get there or call me at 312.391.3253 so I can let you in.

2nd Mondays

As time passes relationships ebb and flow. A sense of belonging is the gravity that continues to pull people towards each other. I would like to facilitate this.

I am starting a “Second Mondays” gathering at my shared studio (1400sqft) in the historic Egyptian Lacquer Building (with a beautiful rooftop view.) The very first 2nd Monday at Glyph Studio will be Monday, Sept 12th from 6-9pm. It will be super casual. I plan on bringing my sketchbook, some beers, queueing some music and having good conversations.

There will be a theme or special event on occasion to activate productivity while surrounded by creative minds. I am very open to discussing potential happenings. I imagine collaborations and other events sprouting out of this network as well. There is a grill for BBQs as well.

Please let me know if you are interested in coming next Monday or on a future 2nd Monday. Thanks!
